Harmonic Bridge

by Bill Fontana

Tate Modern - London - 2006

Harmonic Bridge was my first collaboration with Bill Fontana back in 2006. At the time working for Arup and running the London Arup SoundLab, Bill gave me his mesmirising sounds captured by accelerometers located on the vibrating cables of the Millenium Bridge - also designed by Arup.

My role was to gather B-Format sound recordings of the existing soundscape inside the Turbine Hall (which had back then a standing wave created by the electric transformer located behind the Turbine Hall - the standing wave was 71dB at 125Hz!). I also built an acoustic model (CATT) of the Turbine Hall to obtain the acoustic impulse responses which were convolved with Bill sounds. I also produced the final auralisation in the SoundLab which was presented by Bill to Sir Nicholas Serota and Vicente Todoli.

Harmonic Bridge was on display in June and July 2006.
