Sonic Dreams

Edinburgh International Science Festival - Edinburgh - 2010

Back in 2009, I welcomed Simon Gage, the Edinburgh International Science Festival director in the Glasgow Arup DDS SoundLab. He wanted one for the festival.

Sonic Dreams was literally dreamt that day and will be built in St Andrews Square in Edinburgh. The iconic setting provided a temporary home for a SoundLab erected by Arup, architects 7N and the festival organizers.

Using all the sound art that we at Arup collated through the years with artists, the temporary pavillion aimed primarily at a young audience. Cathie Boyd of Cryptic directed an eclectic mix of auralisation and 3D sound recordings centred around four diverse dreams which were mixed by Iain Laird in the Arup DDS SoundLab.

Working with 7N, I designed on behalf of Arup the temporary pavilion. Loudspeakers were on loan by Tannoy and the Forestry Commission provided the wood required for the construction of the pavilion.
